The end of a school year offers many opportunities for children to be recognized for their accomplishments whether it is perfect attendance or academic excellence. As a parent, I am sure you have recently participated in a variety of these events and perhaps, like me, found yourself pondering the question, “What is the secret to success in the home, school, and extra-curricular environments and how do we inspire our children to experience success?”

Vince Lombardi, one of the greatest coaches in history, is quoted as saying, “The dictionary is the only place that success comes before work. Work is the key to success and hard work can help accomplish anything.” Researchers have been gathering insights into student motivation for decades. Stanford psychology professor Carol Dweck, best known for her book Mindset, How We can Learn to Fulfill our Potential, supports the belief that hard work enhances ability, positive perception of self and improved performance.

Hard work seems to be the deciding factor between those with talent who fail and others who put their talent to work and excel. It takes focused action and persistence to cultivate a “growth mindset” but the rewards are great for those who choose to exert the appropriate effort.

EFFORT

E: Embrace challenges and responsibilities. Provide opportunities for your child to contribute to the family by taking an active role in completing daily chores that help the home run more smoothly.

F: Formulate goals. Help your child set a measurable goal this summer (i.e. related to academic, social, or emotional growth). Make a written plan for accomplishing the goal.

Keep the process simple.

F: Follow daily routines. Start each day with a strong morning and the rest of the day will follow. Practice disciplined habits. Use the 30 day trial method to test and condition a new habit.

O: Offer encouragement. Acknowledge individual effort invested in the process.

R: Remember each day is a new opportunity. Learn/Grow from mistakes. If you were not happy with yesterday; try something different today.

T: Think positive thoughts in order to experience more positive results.
