In Pursuit of Excellence by Dr. Terry Orlick is an excellent book focused on understanding the uniqueness of elite level athletes. Dr. Orlick is a nationally recognized sport psychology professional who has worked with athletes who have been successful on the highest level, including professional and Olympic athletes. One particular aspect of the book that I’d like to highlight is Dr. Orlick’s thoughts stemming from interviews he conducted with professional sports franchise general managers and scouts, while asking them to describe the concept of athletic excellence. Following these interviews, Dr. Orlick narrowed down the themes to the most common responses. The great thing about these traits is the fact that so many of them generalize to purposes away from sports. Consider implementing some of these characteristics in your own life.

  • Listens well and admits errors without excuses

  • After a mistake or coach’s criticism, considers the criticism properly and comes back with a strong response, trying to minimize future mistakes

  • Encourages teammates regardless of personal performances/situations

  • Pursues activities both in and out of season to maintain conditioning and improve skills

  • Competes hard in all forms of competition, whether it is a big game or a practice drill

  • Can control temper in all situations

  • Stays cool and confident in pressure situations

  • Adapts well to stresses of success, failure, travel, demanding schedules, etc.
